Cheap European Accommodation

Cheap accommodation tends to be centred around main train stations, but avoid these areas if possible as they tend to be a bit moody with not much going on. A far better option is to hole up in a university district. These are generally cheap, safe, teeming with bars, cafes, shops, etc, and heavily populated by young folk, (Including girls!), many of whom will speak good English. Your guide book should be able to point you in the right direction here.

If you're keen on sampling the local nightlife I'd always recommend getting a bed as close to the action as possible. Even the biggest of cities are easily navigated by public transport during the day, but after dark, when services become more limited and beers start kicking in, it can be a real nightmare getting back to digs on the other side of town. If you're on a budget taxi fares can really add to the cost of your European weekend breaks, so stay within crawling distance of the bars and clubs, even if accommodation works out slightly more expensive. Think on!

When you've sussed where you want to stay, there's no need to pop down to your local travel agent in the UK, simply have a look on t'internet. Start with the superb hotel booking website www.venere.com, which lets you search cities for accommodation by area, as well as price or star rating. It also offers independent reviews from people who've actually stayed at the hotels listed.

..if you've got your own recommendations, or warnings (!), tell us here and we'll share them on the site

DON'T BOOK ANYTHING YET THOUGH!

When you think you've found the perfect place, always double check on www.travelsupermarket.com to see if you can get a better deal on the same accommodation elsewhere. This excellent comparison site, (one of the best travel companies on the internet), compares venere against the likes of Hotelopia and www.lastminute.com and you'll quite often find the exact same room for less money here.

Consider staying in an apartment too, particularly if there are a few of you or you're staying for a few days. Not only can this work out cheaper, you'll also get a real slice of local life away from the tourists, which is always a BIG plus in my eyes.

Camping is a decent option if you don't mind roughing it, particularly for World Cups and European Championships. Bear in mind you probably won't be anywhere near the city centre though, so don't forget to factor in those additional transport costs getting to and from town, especially at night as mentioned earlier.

Hostels offer another bargain basement accommodation option. Try www.hostelbookers.co.uk for a comprehensive selection of cheap and cheerful city beds.

Okey cokey, you should be all set to nail those cheap accomodation deals now........
